Heir Conditioning by M SHANmugbalingam

SYNOPSIS>

The poem is about the feelings of a grandson and his grandfather over the differences in their ways of life. The grandson asks about living without modern inventions like air conditioners and fax machines. One would have found it difficult to keep cool with the paper fan or have long-distance communication. He feel that life must have been difficult. The grandfather replies that they were ignorant of such inventions. They did not have a modern inventions with the accompanying problems of physical and emotional problem and destruction of nature. They were God-fearing and loved nature while the present generation is feared by nature and money is their God.

THEMES>

   1.Preservation\Destruction of the environment.
   2.Materialism
   3.Progress comes with a price
   4.Respect for nature
5.Material things do not bring happiness
6.The quality of life then and now
   7.Lifestyles then and now
   8.Concern for the environment
   9.With knowledge comes responsibility
10.Material comfort does not ensure a better quality of life.

MORAL VALUES>

1.We must not destroy our environment in the quest for progress.
2.We must balance progress and preservation of the environment.
3.We must always respect and preserve nature.
4.Leaning towards materialism means leaning away from spirituality.

INTROSPECTION>

The poem brings to the fore the fact that the current generation, cushioned by the comfort of modern conveniences, actually think that the older generation led a very difficult life. They think they have it good in spite of pollution and the mental and physical stresses. They think that the older generation were not so lucky and feel sorry for them.
In contrast, the older generation feel that the quality of life has deteriorated since they were young.they feel they had a better quality of life even though they did not have the modern contraptions that make daily living easier. They are fearful for the younger generation.
The younger generation do not know any better, not having experienced any other kind of life. So,they will be inclined to think that their lifestyle is better. The older generation having seen both lifestyle are in a better position to judge. When the younger generation become the older generation, they, too, will probably feel the same way when they compare their lifestyle with that of the generation.
The poem also makes us acutely aware that progress has come with a heavy price. The question is ''Which generation is paying a price?''Is it the generation enjoying all the benefits or is it some future generation? Then,we have to ask ourselves whether it is fair for some future generation to pay hefty price for the benefits that we are enjoying. Is it not their choice to make? Are the future generations going to be the heirs of a 'dead' earth?
The poem also touches on the increasing materialism.Ours is the 'take, take, take'generation. We have taken the forests and the hills;we are taking the sand from the rivers and seas,we have taken the minerals from the earth and we are taking all the fish from the oceans. And in the process of taking,we are polluting everything we touch.Making money seems to be our chief concern, with spirituality and moral values taking a back seat or disappearing altogather. The more money one has,the better,or so it seems. The question we must ask ourselves is this-''Is all that money really making us happy?''

Introduction
Good (morning, afternoon, evening, night) to everyone who may be reading this.I do not want to be a drag so i will get to the point after a picture of amaterasu.

a)River as a source of life.
Every living thing requires water so indirectly the river which is a source of water can be said as a main source of life.
b)River as a dark side
According to the poem, the river is a monster but in real life this can be conveyed as natural disasters that the river causes such as floods.

4.Characters
Actually there are no other characters than the river itself which represents the personalities and the journey of life endured by man which in turn makes man wiser as the days pass.

Literary Devices of Novel Journey To The Centre Of The Earth

Literary Devices :-*

Fantasy : -

The effectiveness of this novel depends solely on fantasy . the descriptions of Otto , Axel and Hans' encounter on their journey , the different elements in the surrounding of every part of the journey that they have saw are unquestionably impossible to happen in the present day . Scientific explorations of the earth have shown that a venture into earth's crust and below is impossible . However , the author has written the story in such convincing way that the readers do not question the impossibility of his ideas . The readers are drawn to this fantastic journey and are taken through the most incredible things as if they are as real as everyday occurrences .

Point of View : -

This story is told from the first person point of view . It is a narration by Axel as a member of the expedition . We can see that there are first person pronouns such as " I " , " my " , " we " , " our " and " us " and second person pronoun " you " . In relating events  , Axel uses third person pronouns such as " it "  and " they " .

Moral Values of Novel Journey To The Centre Of The Earth

Moral Values >.<

Determination : -
" Until I discover the meaning of these ... " Page 7
The unknown languange in which the cryptic note is written proves to be difficult to decipher . However , Otto is not about to give up easily . He is determined to spend as much time , effort and energy in working out the meaning of the message so that he can pursue  his interest in scientific exploration ; the expedition to the centre of the earth .

" fate is having fun with me ... " Page 54
When Otto finds himself and his team back at the same shore they set out from as a result of being caught in electric storm , he is not discouraged by the strength of the force of nature that he finds them in . Instead , he is brave enough to want to sail back across the Lidenbrock Sea despite knowing that they may face the dangers such as the sea creatures and the electric storm that they were caught in earlier .

Diligence : -
" We found  Hans at the edge of the Harbour ... " Page 43
Hans has been a very committed and hardworking member of the expedition . He fulfills his responbilities without having to be prompted or instructed . For example , he builds a raft using the materials he finds in his vicinity and he completes it all by himself while Axel and Otto are away exploring the forest near the Lidenbrock Sea .

Optimism : -

" While you were ... We're sure to find water there " Page 23
Otto is always positive about reaching the centre of the earth . Although the team face many trouble along the way and also objections from Axel , the team continue their journey at Otto's urgency and encouragement  . Every trouble that they face , is dealt  by them with optimism . For instance , when Axel collapses due to dehydration , he pacifies Axel by suggesting that they will find the source of water if they travel on a little further . " While you were ... We're sure to find water here . " Page 23 . At times , he firmly , denies Axel's request to return to the surface . the driving force behind his confidence is the optimism that Otto has in achieving what he has aspired to achieve ; arriving at the centre of the earth .

Themes of Novel Journey To The Centre Of The Earth

Themes :')

There is no limit to what one can achieve

" A dead end ! We're not on the path . That journey will take three days . And your courage with it ? " Page 21
When the team discover that they are at a dead end and Axel once again emphasizes the fact that they are running short of water supply , Otto responds by displaying his disbelieve at Axel's loss of courage in proceeding with the journey . The return journey to the entrance point of the tunnel with the dead end shows that for three days , the three men walked on with very little or no water at all . This shows that , one possesses immense ability to survive extremely challenging conditions ( without water , in this instance ) if one sets his mind to do so .

We should not be afraid to take risks

"This is insanity ! Going down there is like climbing .. "
" Where science had led us , we must follow " Page 14-15
In Chapter 2 , we can see that Axel is not excited and expresses his fears about  climbing into the volcanic crater . He is afraid that it will endanger his life as well as that of his uncle's and Hans' . However , Otto , his uncle , argues that they have to follow where science leads them to , as a motivation towards achieving something that seems impossible ; i.e the venture to the centre of the earth with scientific findings of Arne Saknussem as a guide to their exploration .  Otto displays enthusiasm about continuing with the journey despite knowing that there may be danger ahead if they do so .

One should not give up easily

" Give up ? Professor Otto Lidenbrock never quit ! And neither will you ! " Page 23
Otto is determined to continue their journey although Alex is weak due to dehydration . Through his knowledge of the surrounding , he knows that they will find a source of water in their immediate environment and that they should not give up on their venture just because there is an trouble in their progress . To him , there is no venture without challenges .
